Istanbul is a unique city straddling two continents, Europe and Asia, separated by the Bosphorus Strait. With its dynamic economy, cultural diversity, and millennia of history, it is one of the world’s most captivating destinations. It is the largest city in Türkiye, with more than 16 million inhabitants, making it not only the country’s economic and cultural hub but also one of the most populous metropolitan areas in Europe.
Thanks to its strategic location, Istanbul has always been a crossroads of civilizations. Formerly known as Byzantium and Constantinople, the city has served as the capital of three great empires—Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman—each leaving behind an extraordinary architectural and cultural heritage.
Today, Istanbul offers a stunning blend of old and new: from iconic landmarks such as Hagia Sophia, Topkapı Palace, Blue Mosque, and the Grand Bazaar, to the bustling neighborhoods of Beyoğlu, Kadıköy, and Beşiktaş, and the modern skyline of Levent and Maslak. The Bosphorus bridges, ferries, and waterfront promenades symbolize the harmony of tradition and modernity.
Istanbul is also recognized as a leading cultural capital, with world-class museums, art galleries, theaters, festivals, and a thriving gastronomy scene that blends Anatolian flavors with global cuisine. As a fast-developing global city, Istanbul has successfully hosted numerous international congresses, exhibitions, and cultural events, combining its unmatched history with modern infrastructure. Its diversity, hospitality, and energy make it an inspiring place to connect, exchange, and collaborate. As Türkiye’s beating heart, Istanbul is a city that never sleeps—offering history, innovation, and unforgettable experiences.
Istanbul is home to several UNESCO World Heritage Sites, reflecting its unique cultural and historical legacy: The Archaeological Park, including Hagia Sophia and Topkapı Palace; The Süleymaniye Mosque and its associated complex; Zeyrek Mosque (Pantocrator Monastery); The Land Walls of Theodosius. These sites illustrate the city’s role as a political, religious, and cultural hub for over two millennia.
